This is in my opinion one of the better series in this genre. With few of the bad elements but many of the good. Fortunately the MC does not have the overpowering angst which is far too common in the genre.But this whole series is flawed with excessive flashbacks. So much that it’s sometimes hard to follow the main storyline. And they are all from “previous” life, which is not helping the main story. I really dislike when authors spin two stories that really aren’t that related to each other in “current” time. I get it that it’s background etc. But almost half the book in flashbacks.... is way way way too much.The effect of it in this book was that nothing much really happens. Almost no training, 2 fights and a journey that just got started. Calendar time of a week or two.There was good change in the personal relationships, but nothing much really. It was telegraphed and foreseen, so no surprises. The girls are still underaged and therefore nothing will happen.
